Calculate Your Steps to Calories

How the steps to calories conversion works

The number of calories you burn while walking or running depends on four things: your body weight, your walking speed (which sets the intensity, measured in METs), the distance you cover, and the time it takes. This calculator estimates your stride length from your height (stride ≈ height × 0.415), converts your steps into distance, and applies the standard MET energy-expenditure formula:

Calories = MET × weight (kg) × time (hours)

As a quick rule of thumb, an average-weight adult burns roughly 0.04 calories per step, so about 40 calories per 1,000 steps. The tables below show how that changes with step count and body weight.

Calories per 1,000 steps by body weight

Heavier bodies burn more energy covering the same distance. Approximate calories burned per 1,000 steps at a moderate pace:

Body weightCalories per 1,000 steps
50 kg (110 lb)~28 kcal
60 kg (132 lb)~33 kcal
70 kg (154 lb)~40 kcal
80 kg (176 lb)~45 kcal
90 kg (198 lb)~50 kcal
100 kg (220 lb)~55 kcal

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

For an average-weight adult (around 70 kg / 154 lb) walking at a moderate pace, 10,000 steps burns roughly 400 calories. Heavier people burn more and lighter people less — use the calculator above with your own weight for a personal estimate.

How many steps does it take to burn 100 calories?

At about 0.04 calories per step for an average-weight adult, you burn 100 calories in roughly 2,500 steps. Faster walking or a higher body weight lowers the number of steps needed.

How many steps to burn 500 calories?

Around 12,000–13,000 steps for a person of average weight at a moderate pace. Increase your speed or distance to reach 500 calories in fewer steps.

How many steps does it take to lose 1 pound?

Losing one pound of fat requires a deficit of about 3,500 calories. At roughly 0.04 calories per step that is around 87,500 steps of walking — typically spread across one to two weeks alongside your diet.

Does body weight affect calories burned per step?

Yes. Calories burned scale with body weight: a 100 kg person burns almost twice as many calories per step as a 50 kg person walking the same distance. The calculator factors your weight into the estimate.

How accurate is a steps to calories conversion?

It is a close estimate. This calculator uses MET values, your height (for stride length), weight, and speed to model energy expenditure. Individual factors like fitness level, terrain, and gait mean real values can vary by a few percent.
